Hugo’s spot-kick helps ATK Mohun Bagan to snatch victory against Jamshedpur at VYBK – ISL 2022-23: ATK Mohun Bagan complete a hat-trick of 1-0 victories as they edge Jamshedpur FC at the iconic Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan. The Mariners go within two points of the league leader Mumbai City FC, while the Men of Steel suffer six successive defeats. In the 90th minute, Peter Hartley was shown a straight red for an off-the-ball offense on substitute Kiyan Nassiri inside the box. The linesman spotted the foul and instantly waved his flag for a penalty. Hugo’s injury-time penalty was the only difference between the two sides at the night.
With Brendan Hamill missing the game due to suspension, Carl McHugh started the game at the Center-back position, while Lenny and Deepak played as the double pivot. ATK Mohun Bagan as usual started the game on a positive note, making early in-roads on the defense of Jamshedpur FC. Slowly but surely Jamshedpur took the control of the game, going toe-toe in all the aerial duels.
In the last minute of the first half, half-hearted appeals for a handball were seen inside the Jamshedpur FC box after Pritam Kotal’s shot came off Dinliana’s arm before it was cleared to safety but the referee waved the appeals away.
In the final quarter of the second half, Boumous played a clever give-and-go with Petratos near the edge of the box before squeezing it past the keeper and across the goal. But unfortunately for the Mariners, there was none to tap it in.
The opening goal of the match came right at the death in the most dramatic manner when Ashique was dribbling down the left flank and Hartley came from behind and elbowed Nassiri inside the box. The penalty was awarded as Hugo stepped up to take it and slotted it into the bottom left corner to hand Jamshedpur FC their sixth defeat in a row.
The win takes ATK Mohun Bagan to third in the table, level on points with Hyderabad FC and within two points of leaders, Mumbai. The Mariners will visit the fortress of Kalinga next on December 15. Jamshedpur FC came very close but could not clinch a point, and they remain tenth. The Red Miners will travel to Bengaluru on December 17.
